Pak National Assembly: No-Confidence Motion Tabled Against Imran Khan

Lahore: On Monday, no-confidence motion to remove Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was presented in the parliament. The house will be debating on the motion, which was moved by opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif, on Thursday. A debate on the Motion has been scheduled for March 31.

Pakistan-based news agency the Dawn reported that the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan could be delayed and be held next month. On Sunday, n interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed had told the media that if Pakistan national assembly speaker allowed its tabling on Monday, no-confidence motion would take place on April 4.

The comments by the Pakistan cabinet minister shows that the government is seeking to buy more time in a bid to save the Imran Khan government from getting ousted. The rule states that once a no-trust or no-confidence motion is tabled then it ‘shall not be voted upon before the expiry of three days, or later than seven days.’

The session was called on March 25, three-days after the deadline, the speaker had refused to allow the motion to be tabled.

The opposition parties have shown confidence about getting support of 172 members in the house of 342 to dislodge the government. But the government is claiming that it enjoys the required support in the house to foil the attempt.

Imran Khan had came to power in 2018, and had promised to create a ‘Naya Pakistan’.

The Pakistan Minister is heading a coalition government. If some partners switch sides, he can be dethroned.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan’s party, has 155 members in the 342-member National Assembly and needs at least 172 lawmakers on its side to remain in the government.
