Pakistan: Imran Khan Nominates Former Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed As Caretaker CM

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s leader Imran Khan has nominated the former Chief Justice of Pakistan for the post of caretaker Prime Minister. Imran Khan will have to continue to serve as PM until the caretaker PM is appointed, according to the notice issued by President Arif Alvi.

According to the Dawn newspaper reports, President Alvi has written a letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and also to the Leader Of Opposition Shehbaz Sharif, asking the to propose names.

The letter said that as per the Constitution, the National Assembly and the federal Cabinet have been dissolved.

President Alvi told them that in case they do not agree on an appointment, within three days of the dissolution of the NA, they shall forward two nominees each to a committee to be constituted by the speaker, comprising eight members of the outgoing NA, or the Senate, or both, having equal representation from the treasury and the opposition.

The members of that committee and from the treasury and Opposition benches are to be nominated by the prime minister and the leader of the Opposition.

President’s Secretariat in a statement has said that Constitution has empowered the president to appoint a caretaker prime minister in consultation with the Prime Minister and the leader of the Opposition in the outgoing NA.

Shehbaz Sharif has denied participating in the process, citing it as ‘illegal.’ He said that the president and the prime minister had broken the law and questioned how they could approach the Opposition.

Reacting to Sharif’s decision, outgoing information minister Fawad Chaudhry said: “Pakistan is gearing up for the elections… Shehbaz has said he will not be a part of the process, that’s his choice.

“We have sent two names (to the president) today. If (Shehbaz) does not send the names within seven days, one of these will be finalized”.
