“Presence in UNHRC Intolerable” : UN Watch Slams Pakistan PM Imran Khan Over Comments On Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression

UN Watch retweet his tweet, saying that Pakistan’s presence in the United Nations Human Rights Organization (UNHRC) is intolerable.

Geneva| In a major embarrassment for Pakistan, UN Watch has slammed the country’s Prime Minister for his comments on Blasphemy. After the recent attacks in France and the comments of French President Macron, Imran Khan had targeted France and tweeted that blasphemy cannot be tolerated in the name of freedom of expression. UN Watch retweet his tweet, saying that Pakistan’s presence in the United Nations Human Rights Organization (UNHRC) is intolerable.

Macron after three terror attacks in the span of two months which started over the Charlie Hebdo cartoon mocking Prophet Mohammed had said that worldover “Islam is in Crisis”. The French leader is facing a boycott call from Muslims across the world.

Pakistan has been continuously facing serious allegations of human rights violations. Despite this, Pakistan has been made a member of the United Nations Human Rights Organization along with China and Russia this year. Even at that time, UN Watch had issued a statement objecting to Pakistan becoming a member.

The blasphemy law in Pakistan is used to harass minorities in Pakistan. The blasphemy law was implemented in Pakistan during the rule of dictator Zia-ul-Haq. It was made by adding sections 295-B and 295-C to the Pakistan Penal Code. Actually, Pakistan has inherited blasphemy law from British rule. In 1860, British rule enacted a law for crimes related to religion, which is an extended form of today’s blasphemy law of Pakistan.
