“A big country should look like a big country by showing that it is shouldering more responsibility,” he said.
Chinese President XI Jinping on Tuesday called for a more fair and equitable global governance. While speaking at the annual Boao Forum for Asia, calling for parity in the global order, he said that there are efforts by some countries to “build barriers” and “decouple”, which would harm others and benefit no one.
The forum was attended virtually by a number of Asian leaders, Chinese official media reported, including South Koreaâs Moon Jae-in, Indonesiaâs Joko Widodo, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In his virtual address, he said that â There is no fundamental change in the trend toward a multi-polar world; economic globalization is showing renewed resilience, and the call for upholding multilateralism and enhancing communication and coordination has grown stronger,â he said, calling for countries âto uphold true multilateralismâ and âsafeguard the UN-centered international systemâ

President Jinping also asserted that China would continue to take forward its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including for joint vaccine production that had begun with BRI partners including its allies Indonesia, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey. With a push to deepen connectivity, he said China will âpromote âhard connectivityâ of infrastructure and âsoft connectivityâ of rules and standardsâ.
While China did not make pointed comments against any particular country, it was obvious that his criticism was directed towards the USA and other US-led forums like the Quad which do have great concerns of varying degrees, thanks to some of Beijingâs actions. As a counter punch, the US under Joe Biden, which has problems with the rise of China and its hegemony, has been proactive in trying to rally other democratic allies to harden their stance on Beijing
