โ€œSaheb, Ban Word โ€˜Dollarโ€™ As Wellโ€: Congress Attacks PM As Rupee Briefly Crosses 80-Mark Against Dollar

Opposition on Thursday opened an attack against the Modi government as the Indian rupee on Thursday, 14 July, briefly touched Rs 80 mark against the US dollar. The record fall in value of Rupee was recorded due to a firm US dollar in overseas markets and capital outflows.

In early trade on Thursday morning, the rupee had appreciated 7 paise to 79.74 against the US dollar, as a positive trend in domestic equities supported the local unit. However, in next session, the rupee value depreciated against US dollar, crossing the record low of 80.

Congress spokesperson Kanhaiya Kumar, referring to the row over new booklet banning โ€˜unparliamentaryโ€™ words in both houses of parliament, took a swipe at PM Modi. Mr Kumar, with his tweet in Hindi, attached a screenshot of rupee touching the 80-mark against dollar, and said: โ€œSaheb, now letโ€™s get the word โ€˜dollarโ€™ banned from Parliament too. Otherwise as you said the rupee will keep losing its value and the Prime Minister its dignity.โ€

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, as Rupee touched the 80-mark, took to Twitter and said the Modi government has no action plan. Tweeting in Hindi, Mr Gehlot said: โ€œAfter the record fall in the value of rupee, the price of 1 dollar has crossed Rs 80 for the first time. This is a worrying situation for the Indian economy. This shows that the Modi government has no action plan for the economy.โ€

โ€œDue to the fall in the value of rupee, inflation will increase further in the coming days and foreign exchange reserves will decrease rapidly. A weakening rupee will also reduce the credibility of the country. Where have those who asked the question when the price of 1 dollar was 60 rupees during the UPA government, gone today?โ€ the Rajasthan CM Asked.

The Indian Youth Congress wrote on Twitter: โ€œThe rupee falls to a record low of 80 against the US Dollar, It used to weaken India earlier now it makes us โ€˜Vishwaguruโ€™, wonder how?โ€
