35 Kg Heroin & 13 Kg Cocaine Seized From IGI Airport In Six Months: Delhi Customs Zone

New Delhi: Over 35 kg of heroin and  13 kg of cocaine has been seized at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Ne Delhi, over last six months, said the Delhi Customs Zone of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes, and Customs in a statement.

In the statement they said, โ€œIn the comparable period last year, only 2 NDPS [Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act] cases had been detected at IGI Airport, with a recovery of around 2.5 kg of heroin.โ€

On April 10, a person was caught with 18 kg of heroin and 12 others were detained for swallowing narcotic drugs.

Citing the reason of increase in seizures,  the statement said, โ€œThe increase in the seizures may be due to the spurt in demand for narcotics as India is emerging as a โ€˜major consumption centreโ€™.โ€

It added there has also been an increased vigilance at seaports by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

The statement said heroin trade became a source for generating revenue, as an โ€œeconomic freezeโ€ was implemented in Afghanistan in August 2021.

Washington: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with senior executives from Boeing and Raytheon, two American aerospace and defence companies, and invited them to take advantage of legislative initiatives in India to move from โ€˜Make in Indiaโ€™ to โ€˜Make for the World.โ€™

Mr Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Washington yesterday for the first India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue under the Biden administration, which will take place on Monday.

โ€œRaksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh met with the US aerospace & defence majors Boeing and Raytheon after reaching Washington DC. He exhorted the companies to take advantage of policy initiatives in India to steadily march from โ€˜Make in Indiaโ€™ towards โ€˜Make for the Worldโ€™, โ€ the Defence Ministry tweeted today.

Mr. Jaishankar and Mr. Singh will be hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for the 2+2 ministerial on Monday.

The 2+2 ministerial, which will take place in the midst of the Ukrainian crisis, reflects the importance the two governments place on their bilateral strategic relationship.

President Biden, in fact, has signalled that the 2+2 ministerial will be elevated by holding a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the White House on Monday.

The two Indian ministers would participate in a virtual meeting from the White House with their American colleagues.

On Monday afternoon, the 2+2 ministerial, along with the various delegations, will meet at the State Department.

The 2+2 Dialogue would enable both sides to undertake a comprehensive review of cross-cutting issues in the India-US bilateral agenda related to foreign policy, defence and security with the objective of providing strategic guidance and vision for further consolidating the relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release on Thursday.

โ€œThe 2+2 Dialogue will also provide an opportunity to exchange views about important regional and global developments and how we can work together to address issues of common interest and concern,โ€ it said.

According to the State Department, the 2+2 Ministerial is an essential opportunity to promote our shared goals across the US-India Strategic Partnership.

On the importance of the summit, it was also stated that it is an opportunity to emphasise the expanding Major Defense Partnership between the United States and India.
