New Delhi: The number of Omicron cases in India has reached 781 on Wednesday with the national capital Delhi topping the chart with 238 cases, including 57 recoveries. Maharashtra is second with 167 Pmicron cases including 72 recoveries. Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, West Bengal have two-digit figures of Omicron cases, according to health ministry data. The rapid spread of the latest variant of SARS-CoV-2 also impacted Indiaโ€™s total tally of cases as it recorded around a 44% increase from Tuesday with 9,195 cases.

The overall Covid tally of India has been around 7,000 to 8,000 for weeks. Even after the first Omicron cases were reported in India in the first week of December, the overall Covid tally did not show any considerable change. With Delhi clocking in an astronomical rise in daily tally, the situation worsened in the last 24 hours.

A yellow alert has been issued in Delhi limiting passengers in public transport. Schools, colleges, gyms, cinema halls have been closed in an emergency measure while restaurants and bars have been allowed to operate only at 50 per cent capacity. Delhi on Tuesday recorded a massive spike in the daily Covid-19 tally with 496 fresh cases, the highest since June 4, while the positivity rate also rose to 0.89 per cent.

PM To Hold Council Of Ministers Meet Today; Assembly Polls On Agenda, Along With Rising Omicron Cases

Aleesha Sam

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today will hold a Council of Ministers meeting amid rising cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus. The meeting is expected to take place at 4pm, according to Hindustan Timesโ€™.

According to the report, the meeting is expected to be attended by all ministers and among the things that are expected to be discussed include next yearโ€™s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

PM Modi had taken stock of the pandemic situation in a high-level meeting called last Thursday where he asked officials to maintain a high level of vigil and alertness amid the Omicron spread.

In a communication to the states and UTs earlier, the Centre had said the Omicron variant is at least thrice more transmissible than its Delta variant and asked them to โ€œactivateโ€ war rooms, keep analysing even small trends and surges and keep taking strict and prompt containment action at the district and local levels.

India has identified 653 cases of the Omicron variant across 21 states and union territories (UTs) so far, out of which 186 people have recovered or migrated, the Union health ministry said on Tuesday.

Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 167 such cases followed by Delhi at 165, Kerala 57, Telangana 55, Gujarat 49 and Rajasthan 46.

The report quoted an expert as saying, โ€œIt is likely that India will see a period of explosive growth in daily cases and that the intense growth phase will be relatively short.โ€

Last week, India allowed booster shots and included teenagers aged 15 to 18 in the ongoing vaccination drive. Two more vaccines as well as Merck & Co.โ€™s antiviral pill molnupiravir were approved by the local drug regulator on Tuesday.
