Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will contest next month’s Assembly election – his first – from the Karhal seat in Mainpuri district, which is in his family’s home turf.
Karhal is one of five Assembly seats that make up the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which elected Mr Yadav’s father, and Samajwadi Party founder, Mulayam Singh Yadav to the Lok Sabha five times.
In November, Akhilesh Yadav told reporters he would not contest the election. His party, however, had other ideas and rushed to clarify that a final decision would be taken by the collective.
The Samajwadi Party has a lot of dominance in the Karhal assembly seat. Baburam Yadav had fought for the first time on behalf of the SP from Karhal in the year 1995. He became MLA from this seat thrice. In the year 2002, BJP’s Sobran Singh Yadav won the elections. From the year 2007 till now, only Sobran Singh Yadav has won the election on this seat thrice. Seeing this figure of victory, SP workers are claiming the victory of Akhilesh Yadav.
UP votes in a seven-phase poll that begins February 10, with results due exactly one month later.
