Mumbai: Sanjay Raut, the Shiv Sena MP, has accused the BJP of plotting to turn Mumbai into a Union Territory, claiming that a presentation to that effect had been made to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Interacting with reporters, Raut claimed that former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, as well as a number of party leaders, builders, and merchants, were involved in the plot.
“A presentation about making Mumbai a union territory has been made to the MHA (by this group). Meetings have been held and funds are being collected for this purpose. This has been going on for the last two months and I am saying this with full responsibility. I have proof to substantiate what I am saying. Chief minister (Uddhav Thackeray) is also aware of this development,” Raut said.
The party lead by Somaiya is expected to go to court in the coming months, claiming that the percentage of Marathi people in Mumbai, Maharashtra’s capital, has dropped dramatically and that the city should be declared a union territory under central government administration, according to the Sena MP.
Raut said Somaiya had earlier challenged the state government’s decision to make Marathi a compulsory language in schools.
