New Delhi: Mayawati, Dalit leader, today slammed Rahul Gandhi’s remark that she had rejected the Congress’s overtures for an alliance. She claimed that Mr Gandhi “can’t get his own house in order but takes potshots at the BSP.”
Insisting what Mr Gandhi said is “absolutely false”, Mayawati insisted that the loss of UP elections should be the focus now than “these petty things”.
“The Congress must think 100 times before making such comments. They have been unable to win from the BJP but just keep taking these potshots. Congress has done nothing even in power and even out of power,” she added.
Mr Gandhi stated on Saturday that the Congress had offered Mayawati an alliance and even offered to make her the Chief Ministerial candidate, but that “she did not even talk to us.”
The former Congress president lashed out at Mayawati, alleging that she handed the ruling BJP a free pass in the state because of “the CBI, the ED, and Pegasus.”

“Now even Priyanka Gandhi is doing the same by saying that I am afraid of ED and other probe agencies. All of this are not true. They should know that we have fought and won all these issues in the Supreme Court,” she added.

In the recently-concluded assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress went it alone. Following the terrible performance of the alliance with the Congress in the 2017 elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has formed a rainbow coalition with smaller parties in its place.
Even though the BJP won the election, this increased the SP’s performance significantly, thereby driving the Congress out of the state.
The party had one of its worst showings, winning only two seats out of 403 and receiving less than 2.5 percent of the vote. Ninety-seven percent of the Congress candidates’ security deposits had been forfeited.
The performance of the BSP was just marginally better than that of the Congress.
With a vote share of roughly 13%, the BSP won only one seat. In the election, which turned out to be a bipolar struggle between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, about 72% of its candidates lost their deposits.
