New Delhi: The Congress has enrolled over 2.6 crore members digitally, under their ongoing organisational election campaign. This is the first time in the history of the grand old party that, apart from traditional memberships, it has rolled out a digital drive.
Speaking with India Today Praveen Chakravarty, the Chairman of Congress’ Data Analytics department said, “Membership for the first time in the Congress party’s history has gone digital. We were actually surprised by how quickly the party took to digital membership. This is a big change that the party has adopted.”
On November 21, 2021 the Congress Membership Drive began.
Praveen said that they have enrolled 2.6 crore members digitally. These are verified members who went through the four-step verification process.
Under this drive, new additions were made only by approved party enrollers, mobile numbers of the members were verified with an OTP, their voter ID was verified by the election commission and their photo was taken through an application and verified.
“It is a thoroughly verified member and through it, we have added over two crore digital members alone,” Chakravarty added.
In coming days by using this app, the party members can connect with the top authorities, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Chakravarty said that Rahul Gandhi has categorically mentioned that we will be using input from these people for various organisational decisions. The app has been meticulously designed to help Rahul Gandhi and the Congress president to engage directly with the members. Hopefully, this app will help demolish the wall between top Congress leadership and the grassroots workers.
Earlier, for internal communication, Congress had launched the ‘Shakti’ app before 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.
Talking about the upgradation of the app, Chakravarty said, “The Congress Membership App is the second most-used political app in India already. This is about the organisation. On this app, we have five lakh Congress party workers. We know in which booth and in which assembly we have our people. This app will be upgraded soon.”
