Controversial Remark On Rape By Andhra Home Minister Sparks Outrage

Amravati: Taneti Vanitha, the newly appointed Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has sparked outrage with her statements on recent rape crimes in the state. She said the group rape of a 25-year-old pregnant lady at Repalle railway station on May 1 was unintentional and occurred due to unforeseen circumstances. In the context of a sexual attack on a juvenile in Vizag, she had previously stated that a mother is accountable for the safety of her child.

She has blamed rape incidents on “psychological situations” and poverty, even claiming the accused didn’t plan to rape. It happened in a “unexpected manner” because the men were drunk and attacked with the intention of robbing the survivor’s husband, but she intervened, and the rape occurred “unexpectedly,” as she put it.

“The woman tried to halt the attack on her husband, but then unforeseen things happened,” she said, adding that the lack of a sufficient railway police force could not be blamed. More CCTV cameras would be deployed at train stations, she stated.

The Telugu Desam Party, which is in opposition, has attacked the Home Minister, calling her words irresponsible.

In the last two weeks, there have been two rapes at train stations in Andhra Pradesh.

On April 16, a Maharashtra lady was raped at the Gurazala train station, and two suspects were detained.
