The newly-appointed Commissioner of Police (CP) of Mumbai city, Sanjay Pandey, reached out to fellow Mumbaikars on Thursday via Facebook post. In a rare instance of senior police officer making himself available for the common man, Mr Pandey shared not only his personal contact number, but also links to his Facebook and Twitter profile for people to contact in case of emergency or crisis.
In his post addressing “My dear Mumbaikars”, the CP Mumbai said: “Its a matter of great honor for me to be your Commissioner of Police. And I am writing this first post to you with a deep sense of humility and responsibility.”
“While I took the charge yesterday, I have I have spent last 30 plus years in Mumbai. And have worked in various positions in Mumbai police. Some would remember me from my Dharavi days in 1992-93 and others when I headed the economic offences in 1996-1997,” Mr Pandey said.
It should be noted that during the communal riots of 1992-93, when there was an atmosphere of tension and violence in the whole Mumbai, Sanjay Pandey was serving as DCP. He had brought the violent situation under control in Dharavi. He was also highly praised by the Sri Krishna Commission for bringing the situation under control. During that time, he had a dispute with some political leaders in power, but he did not bow down.
While working in the Economic Offenses Wing in 1997, Mr Pandey had exposed the Abhuday Bank scam, and the leather scam was investigated.
In his Facebook post, Mr Pandey further wrote: “While I am familiar with Mumbai, policing has changed from the days when I worked in Mumbai. And it is with this in mind, that I am reaching out to you seeking your support to work towards maintaining safety and security for all in our city of Mumbai.”
“I am sharing my personal number 9869702747. You can always reach out to me on WhatsApp/text messages as well as facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100066410464886 or Twitter @sanjayp_1,” the CP Mumbai wrote, in an apparent outreach after taking over the top post.
“Suggestions big or small are all welcome. I will respond to all the messages as far as possible. I too will share with you what work we are doing on a weekly basis on facebook. I will look forward to hearing from you and working towards our motto of ‘safety and security to all’ in Mumbai,” he wrote.
Sanjay Pandey, an IPS officer of 1986 batch, was appointed as Mumbai Police Commissioner on Monday, 28 February. He replaced Hemant Nagrale, who has now been handed over the responsibility of Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC).
