Hanuman Chalisa Row: Mumbai Police Arrest MP Navneet Rana, Husband Ravi Rana

Mumbai: MP Navneet Rana and MLA Ravi Rana have been arrested by Mumbai’s Khar police. The Rana couple has been arrested under Section 153 (A). Action has been taken against him for making provocative statements.

After Navneet Rana announced that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside ‘Matoshree’, the residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena workers gathered in large numbers outside Rana couple’s residence in Mumbai this morning and shouted slogans.

MP Navneet Rana and MLA Ravi Rana have stated that they will not visit Matoshree, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. This was followed by a dramatic turn of events around noon today.

Police officers reached the Rana couple’s house in Khar in the afternoon. Mumbai Police had come to take him to the police station. However, Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana refused. In a video it can be seen that the police officer and Navneet Rana were seen having a conversation. He was heard saying, “Lower your voice, lower your voice … We are the people’s representatives, you go away, it was seen talking to the officer.”

In Suburban Khar, Shiv Sena workers broke through the barricades and tried to enter the premises of the legislator couple’s residence. The Mumbai Police, however, brought the situation under control and stopped the Shiv Sena workers from going further.

Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana, both independent legislators from Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, have been accused by the MVA leaders of playing to the tune of the opposition BJP.

A team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Manjunath Singe visited the residence of couple on Friday and served them a notice, asking them to maintain law and order. To avoid crowding and any untoward incident, Mumbai Police have increased security outside ‘Matoshree’ and placed barricades on the road leading to the Thackeray residence.

After Shiva Sena workers yesterday turned up outside Rana couple’s residence and dared them to step out of their residence, police personnel were deployed outside the couple’s apartment as well.
