Hate Speech: Jitendra Tyagi Granted Bail By Supreme Court

New Delhi: In connection with the inquiry into hate speech at a Haridwar Dharam Sansad held in December last year, the Supreme Court today granted Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi, formerly known as Wasim Rizvi, three-month interim release.

Mr Tyagi was granted interim release on medical grounds by a bench led by Justice Ajay Rastogi, who stipulated that he must promise not to engage in hate speech and not to make any statements to electronic, digital, or social media.

It advised Mr Tyagi’s counsel, Vikas Singh, to advise his client not to make hate statements and to promote societal unity.

According to a lawyer for the Uttarakhand government, the maximum penalty for the offense for which Mr Tyagi was charged is three years in prison.

“We have to maintain communal harmony at all costs. If he makes hate speech his bail should be cancelled automatically without notice. As regards his medical condition is concerned, it is stable. He has some cardiac problems,” the lawyer told the bench.

“Before they ask to sensitise others they have to sensitise themselves first. They are not sensitised. This is something which is spoiling the whole atmosphere,” the bench had said while referring to the controversial Haridwar Dharam Sansad event.
