New Delhi: The Twitter account of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was hacked on Wednesday for a short period of time. The hacked renamed the account as ‘Elon Musk’ and started tweeting “great job.”
However, the ministry regained the control and deleted all the tweets and restored the profile picture. The hackers even posted some malicious links from it.
Earlier, on December 12, 2021, the personal Twitter handle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefly hacked. While the account was restored shortly after, a tweet promoting cryptocurrency had already been shared from the handle.
On January 3, the Twitter accounts of the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Mann Deshi Mahila Bank (a microfinance bank) were hacked. In that case, too, the hackers had renamed the handle as ‘Elon Musk’.
The fonts used to change the names of the profiles in today’s (January 12, 2021) incident and the January 3 incident appear to be the same. The posted content ‘AMAZZZING’ also appeared to be similar, though the links tweeted in the two cases seemed to be different.
After the account was restored, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting tweeted that their account is back in their control now.
