On April 12, a bypoll for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat and four assembly seats will be held.

After sitting MP Babul Supriyo resigned from the Lok Sabha in October last year due to differences with the BJP, the Asansol seat became vacant. He then became a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Meanwhile, the West Bengal assembly seat of Ballygunge has been empty since sitting MLA Subrata Mukherjee, a minister in the West Bengal government, died on November 4 last year after a brief illness.
