“Immediately Transfer Chandigarh To Punjab”: Bhagwant Mann’s Resolution In Punjab Assembly

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on April 1, in the Assembly moved a resolution appealing that Chandigarh should be transferred to  Punjab immediately. He also accused the centre of trying to “upset the balance” in administering the Union Territory.

This move by Mann comes two weeks after he became the Chief Minister of Punjab, and comes amid the ongoing tussle between the Centre and Punjab to control the Union Territory which is the capital of Punjab and neighboring Haryana.

In the notice for the resolution, Mann said, “Under the Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966, the state of Punjab was reorganised into the state of Haryana, the Union Territory of Chandigarh and some parts of Punjab were given to the then Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh.”

“For maintaining harmony and taking the sentiments of people into account, this House once again recommends to the state government to raise the matter with Central government to immediately transfer Chandigarh to Punjab,” according to the resolution moved by CM Mann in the House.

“Since then, a balance was mentioned in the administration of common assets like Bhakra Beas Management Board by way of giving management positions in some proportion to the nominees of State of Punjab and State of Haryana. Through many of its recent actions, the Central Government is trying to upset this balance,” he said in the notice.

This special Assembly session comes days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah made an announcement of central service rules to be implemented for employees of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Congress MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh and his son Rana Inder Pratap Singh, who is an Independent legislator, were administered oath of office today.
