Reading Preamble mandatory in Schools across Maharashtra starting from 26th January

Reciting of Preamble is a part of the “sovereignty of Constitution, welfare of all” campaign, a government circular said on Tuesday.

Mumbai| State Minister Varsha Gaikwad said that reading Preamble to Constitution will be mandatory in all schools across Maharashtra, starting from January 26.

“Students will recite the preamble to the constitution every day after morning prayers so that they understand its importance. It is an old government resolution, but we will implement it from January 26,” said the Education Minister, who is a part of the Indian National Congress.

Tuesday’s Government Resolution (GR) also directs the schools to put up a plaque or board with the Preamble and encouraged schools to hold quizzes, essay, drawing, slogan, poster competitions based on the Constitution.

When the resolution was issued in 2013, during the Congress-NCP government, it had faced disinclination and contempt from civil society members and activists. According to the circular dated 21 January, it was not been implemented.

“To understand the scope of constitutional values and their all-inclusiveness and instil values such as justice, freedom, equality and fraternity on the society, it is important that students have a comprehensive introduction to the Constitution…The young minds of this age will thus become responsible, cultured citizens. It is expected that this starts during school-going age and that is why every day, during the morning routine, there should be a collective reading of the Preamble,” said another resolution issued on Tuesday.

The move to inculcate Preamble reading in schools comes at a time when there are nationwide massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens. Protesters including Lawyers and Activists have been reading Preamble to the Constitution at the Anti-CAA and Anti-NRC demonstration to call the attention to the discriminatory nature of the laws.
