BJD Chief Naveen Patnaik: “We will support CAA but not implement NRC”

The memorandum said “We are happy to know from media reports that you have assured not to support and implement NRC in Odisha

Bhubaneshwar: The Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday said the ruling BJD does not support NRC but backed the citizenship law, noting that it applies only to foreigners. He also appealed to the people of Odisha to maintain peace and not fall for rumors.

“The Citizenship Amendment Act has nothing to do with Indians. It deals only with foreigners. The BJD MPs both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have made it clear that we do not support the NRC,” Patnaik told reporters before leaving for Delhi.

The chief minister’s comments came a day after people protesting on the Citizenship Act took out a peaceful rally in the state capital and requested Patnaik to make the BJD government’s stance clear on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Protesters of different religions held placards against the Citizenship Act and NRC but did not raise slogans during a rally that started at Satyanagar Masjid here and was slated to end near Naveen Niwas, the chief minister’s house.

Protestors held placards describing CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) as “Conspiracy Against Bharat”.

The memorandum said “We are happy to know from media reports that you have assured not to support and implement NRC in Odisha. We are hopeful that you will stand by your decision in the future,”.
