โ€œNo Death Is Uncounted In Delhiโ€, AAP Govt On WHOโ€™s Excess Covid Death Toll Report

New Delhi: The day after the World Health Organization claimed in its report that more than 47,000 people had died in India from the Covid 19 pandemic, the Delhi government issued a counter-argument on Friday, stating that all figures in the capital were โ€œgenuine and correct.โ€

โ€œDelhi numbers are authentic and correct. Almost 25,600 deaths have taken place and each of them has been counted. In Delhi, the data has not been fudged even for a single death. I cannot comment on the data for the entire country or other states but no Covid death in the national capital has gone uncounted,โ€ Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain said.

โ€œWe have counted neither one death more nor one death less. Delhi is the capital city of the country and is it possible that someone dies of Covid here and doesnโ€™t get a death certificate?โ€ he asked.

According to the WHO report, there have been 4.7 million Covid-19 deaths in India โ€“ which is 10 times the official figure and almost a third of Covid deaths globally. During the period, for which India was estimated by WHO as having recorded 4.7 million deaths due to Covid-19, directly or indirectly, the country recorded an official death toll of roughly 520,000.

However, the center rejected WHO data because it was โ€œdefective.โ€

โ€œIndia has been consistently objecting to the methodology adopted by WHO to project excess mortality estimates based on mathematical models. Despite Indiaโ€™s objection to the process, methodology and outcome of this modelling exercise, WHO has released the excess mortality estimates without adequately addressing Indiaโ€™s concerns,โ€ the government said in a statement.

โ€œShinde Will Come Backโ€; What Uddhav Thackeray Told Sena MLAs In Meeting

Tejas Joshi

As his government stands itโ€™s test for stability after a rebellion, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said rebel minister Eknath Shinde will come back to the party fold.

At a meeting of Sena leaders last evening, Mr Thackeray was quoted as saying: โ€œTalks with Eknath Shinde are on. I spoke to him. He will return. NCP is also with us.โ€

As per sources, Mr Thackeray had asked Mr Shinde to reconsider and return to the fold. The rebel leader, however, said that so far, he has not taken any decision or signed any document, and that he has taken this step for the betterment of the party.

If reports are to be believed, Mr Shinde has been insisting to get back in alliance with the BJP, and breakup with current allies NCP and Congress.

โ€œSome are saying that we should go with BJP. But how do we do that. We were with them and have suffered. Why should we go with them,โ€ the Sena chief reportedly told party leaders.

The Shiv Sena supremo underscored that โ€˜all MLAs will be with us soonโ€™, sending a message of unity, the sources said. Mr Thackeray stressed that the Congress and NCP are with the party.

While MVA partners, including the Sena, has blamed the BJP for engineering this rebellion, Mr Shinde himself has cited an ideological reason for this drastic move.

โ€œBalasaheb has taught us Hindutva. We have never and will never cheat for power regarding Balasahebโ€™s thoughts and Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Sahebโ€™s teachings,โ€ Mr Shinde had tweeted in Marathi on Tuesday.
