Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea, the former media executive accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012, was released on bail today, a day after the Supreme Court’s order.
She could not be released yesterday as the paperwork could not be completed on time.
“We are granting bail to Indrani Mukerjea. 6.5 years is too long a time,” said the court on Thursday.
Indrani Mukerjea, who has been held in a Mumbai jail since 2015, petitioned the Supreme Court in February after a special CBI court repeatedly rejected her release.
Because she had “previously spent a considerable time” in prison, the Supreme Court agreed that she was entitled to bail. Bail was granted on the condition that he not leave the country or contact witnesses.
Peter Mukerjea, Indrani Mukerjea’s husband, was arrested on charges of assisting her and was released on bail in 2020.
Sheena Bora, 24, was murdered in April 2012, and her body was dumped in Raigad, near Mumbai, according to authorities.
Sheena Bora was Indrani Mukerjea’s unrecognized daughter, who was introduced to the world as her sister. She was also betrothed to Rahul Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea’s son from a previous marriage, a union that her mother fiercely opposed.
