Huge Gap In Figures Of GST Compensation Due To Maharashtra: RTI

New Delhi: Among all the states in the country, Maharashtra has the highest amount of balance GST compensation — Rs 6,430 crore — which is yet to be released by the central government. Prafful Sarda, a social activist, has sought this information under RTI.

In reply to his application, the State Public Information Officer has stated: “You have sought information regarding details about how much Maharashtra State’s GST Goods and Services Tax pending with Central Government. In order to get the information, the assistance of concern officers, was sought as per provision of Section 5(4) of the Right to Information Act. 2005. The Joint Commissioner of State Tax (Mahavikas). Maharashtra State, Mumbai vide letter no. B-1680, dt. 16.11.2021, the Joint Commissioner of State Tax. (Elu). The below PDF comprise of Maharashtra government’s response to the RTI filed by Sarda.

In its response, the Maharashtra government has informed Sarda that it is yet to receive Rs 25,481 crore in GST dues. The amount, however, is fairly larger than the one stated by the centre. Let us take a look at the centre’s response to the RTI application filed by Sarda in the same matter.

The Centre referring to his online RTI Application, has stated that the balance GST due to the state of Maharashtra is Rs 6,781. The amount is Rs 18,700 crore lesser than that stated by the Maharashtra government.

Following PDF comprise the response from the centre to Sarda’s RTI application.

The revelations from the RTI response raise questions over the exact amount due to the state of Maharashtra and process followed by both the state and the centre to calculate the amount.

“RTI reply from Central and state showing about huge difference and different numbers about GST amount pending with central ministry. As on 8/11/2021 – central ministry said only Rs.6723 Cr pending where Maharashtra state govt saying Rs.25481 Cr is pending. The difference amount is 4 times of it both them are claiming, as a citizen whom to believe ? Why figures are confusing?”, asked Prafful Sarda.
