2 DMK functionaries attempt self-immolation amidst protests in Tamil Nadu over Cauvery issue

Two workers of DMK who were protesting in Tamil Nadu against the Centre for failing to constitute the CMB allegedly attempted to immolate themselves. They were protesting in compliance with the order issued on 16 February by the Supreme Court, as so was stated by the police. The agitations are said to have been taken place in different parts of the state over the aggravated issue.

The two functionaries of the DMK, identified as Singai Sadashivam and P T Murugesan drenched themselves with kerosene and tried immolating themselves at Peelamudu, said the police.

Group members of certain fringe outfits along with groups of farmers today gathered in front of the office of district collectorate and shouted slogans, seeking an immediate constitution of Cauvery Management Board.

As per the police, reports of various members of certain political parties blocking the roads have also surfaced.

The opposition parties that are led by DMK had yesterday on Sunday had called in for a shutdown across the state on 5 April wanting constitution of the CMB by the Centre. The party said that it would continue holding protests like the one that they had held in Chennai till CMB is constituted.

Both the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre had moved the Supreme Court on 31 March on the issue of composition and constitution of CMB in acquiescence with the verdict issued on 16 February of the apex court on the argumentative issue.
