Kupwara: Three cops including two of Jammu and Kashmir Police (J&K) today attained martyrdom while three others sustained injuries in the ongoing encounter between security forces and militants in Helmatpora area of Kupwara.
The encounter which broke out yesterday afternoon is still underway despite the killing of four heavily armed militants. Security forces so far have recovered the body of only two slain militants while searches are also on for the third one.
Yesterday, the security forces had killed four of the hiding militants and then a combined operation was launched to find others. During the searches, contact was again established with the militants resulting in a heavy exchange of fire between the duo.
But during the exchange of fire three cops including two of the JKP attained martyrdom while three others also got seriously injured and were shifted to hospital for treatment.
Those who attained martyrdom have been identified as M.yousf 602/spo of SOG Kupwara, Nk.Mohd Ashraf Rather 160 of T.A and Sgct Deepak Pandita of SOG Kupwara.
The injured cops were identified as Javid Ahmad, N K Ranjeet Singh and S.I. Hirvinder Singh.
Pertinently, a joint CASO was launched by security forces in Kupwara yesterday on specific inputs about the presence of 5 to 6 militants in the area and during the searches, a contact was established with the hiding militants which led to a gunfight.
Heavy exchange of fire was on when the last reports came in.
