On Friday, Punjab AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi died from a gunshot to his head at his residence in Ludhiana.
The incident took place when the AAP MLA at his residence was cleaning his weapon; the city police chief said it was being verified “if it was a suicide or accidental fire”.
After the gun was fired, the MLA was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Gurpreet Gogi quit the Congress after 22 years to join AAP before the Punjab Assembly Elections and was given a ticket from Ludhiana West.
When Gogi was in Congress, he was a four-time congress councillor in Ludhiana Municipal Corporation and former district president of Ludhiana Congress.
The Joint Commissioner Police said, “According to his family member, it was an accidental fire”.
The body has been kept at the mortuary of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. The case is under investigation, and a post-mortem will be conducted.
Gogi’s death has shocked several political leaders, and they are reaching out to his residence in Ludhiana to express condolence.
Punjab AAP President Aman Arora posted on the social media platform X, stating, “My deepest condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time. May they find the strength to endure this painful loss. I pray to the Almighty that his noble soul rests in eternal peace.”
Gogi had met with Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Balbir Singh Seecheal about cleaning ‘Buddha Nalla’ hours before his death.
