On Thursday a Court in Canada granted bail to four Indian nationals. All the four were accused in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Four Indian citizens are Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh. All four face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The trial has been transferred to the British Columbia Supreme Court. Furthermore, the next hearing is set for February 1, 2025.
According to reports, Hardeep Nijjar was a prominent pro-Khalistan leader. Nijjar was assassinated in June 2023 in Surrey, British Columbia. The alleged murder case garnered international attention.

This comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government’s involvement in the murder. However, India has strongly denied these allegations. It called them completely “baseless” and “politically motivated”.

Meanwhile, the four Indian nationals were arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The arrests were made in May 2024 from different parts of Canada. However, the prosecution faced criticism for delays in presenting evidence during preliminary hearings.

According to India Today’s examination of Court documents, all four men were released under “stay of proceedings” while awaiting trial. All four appeared before the Supreme Court during a hearing on November 18, 2024.

As per court records, the status of all four defendants was marked as ‘N’, indicating that they are “not” in custody. This means the individuals are not currently detained and may be out on bail or released under specific conditions while awaiting further court proceedings.

However, The controversy around Nijjar’s death has led to strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada. Tensions escalated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in Parliament that he has “credible allegations” of India’s hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
