Assam: 5 Arrested For Assaulting Alleged Bike Thief

Assam police apprehended five individuals in Cachar district for reportedly assaulting a suspected motorcycle thief and subsequently shaving his head. The incident occurred in the Katigorah area near the India-Bangladesh border on January 30, with the case officially filed on the following day, as per police statements.

“A video of the incident was recorded and based on that we identified the accused,” officials said.

On Friday, Joseph Keivom, the official in charge of the Katigorah police station, reported that on January 29, a motorbike was taken from the nearby area of Karimganj. On January 30, the owners apprehended the bike lifter in Cachar using the GPS device placed in the car.

“After being caught, the bike lifter tried to escape by running through a paddy field when the locals stopped and thrashed him. The locals then tied him to an electric pole, shaved his head and recorded a video which was later released on social media,” Keivom said.

According to the police, they have identified around 30 persons who were directly involved in the incident; five have been arrested. The remaining twenty-five have been asked to appear in person.

“They were produced before the court after arrest and the court remanded them to police custody. We are investigating the matter further,” Keivom said. The police stated that the accused bike lifter was also charged with theft.
