Donald Trump Challenges Kamala Harris For Debate On Fox News

Former US President Donald Trump challenged Vice President Kamala Harris for a debate on Fox News next month. Trump said he would not debate Harris at all if she didnโ€™t show up for that.  Earlier, the former president backed out of a debate hosted by ABC News for September 10. Harris โ€“ the most likely presidential nominee of the Democrats โ€“ said she will attend the ABC debate. The two are yet to have a one-on-one debate โ€“ an important convention in USโ€™ electoral politics.

Bill To Appoint Top 3 Poll Officers Passed, CJI Replaced By Union Minister

Akanksha Yadav

The Lok Sabha, amidst Opposition suspensions, passed a bill introducing a new mechanism to appoint top election officers. The Rajya Sabha previously approved the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023.

The legislation, having cleared Parliament, now awaits the Presidentโ€™s approval. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal emphasized the billโ€™s comprehensive coverage, addressing gaps left by the 1991 Act on service conditions for senior poll officers. The Bill passed via a voice vote.

The recent legislation replacing the Chief Justice with a Union Minister has sparked Opposition concerns, suggesting it enhances government influence on top poll officer appointments, jeopardizing poll body autonomy.
