Former Japan Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, Shot At :Japanese Media

Japanโ€™s chief cabinet secretary will address the media at around 0400 GMT (9.30 am IST).

Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot at in western Japan on Friday, according to Japan-based media house NHK.

 The 67-year-old is showing no vital signs after being taken to the hospital, A suspect has been detained and is being questioned, the reports said.

Japanโ€™s chief cabinet secretary will address the media at around 0400 GMT (9.30 am IST).

โ€œFormer Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo collapsed during a speech in the city of Nara, in western Japan. Initial reports say he may have been injured. An NHK reporter on-site heard something that sounded like a gunshot, and saw Abe bleeding,โ€ it said in an alert.

Another Japanese media house Kyodo said that the former PM is unconscious and appears to be in cardio-respiratory arrest.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed concern on Twitter. He wrote โ€œDeeply distressed by the attack on my dear friend Abe Shinzo. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and the people of Japan.โ€
