Indian-Origin Man Sentenced To Life For 30-Year-Old UK Murder

Indian-Origin Man Sentenced To Life For 30-Year-Old UK Murder

Sandip Patel, an Indian-origin man, received a life sentence for the murder of Marina Koppel, a woman in London, 30 years ago. Patel was connected to the crime through a strand of hair at the scene. He brutally stabbed Koppel approximately 140 times in her Westminster flat in 1994. Patelโ€™s conviction came following innovative forensic work on the hair found on a ring worn by Koppel.

Marina Koppel, aged 39 at the time, maintained an unconventional yet happy marriage, working as a masseuse and occasional sex worker to support her family in Colombia. Her husband discovered her lifeless body on August 8, 1994, covered in blood, prompting a police investigation.

Initially, Patelโ€™s fingerprints on a plastic bag at the crime scene were deemed insignificant, as he worked at the shop where the bag originated. Years passed, with the case remaining unsolved until advancements in forensic techniques enabled DNA profiling from a hair found on Koppelโ€™s ring, linking it to Patel.

Specialist Crime detectives pursued the case, leading to Patelโ€™s arrest in January last year. Further evidence, including footprints matching Patelโ€™s and the use of Koppelโ€™s stolen bank card near Patelโ€™s residence, supported the prosecutionโ€™s case.

Despite Marina Koppelโ€™s husband passing away in 2005, her family found closure in Patelโ€™s conviction. Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin emphasized the importance of forensic advancements in solving cold cases like Koppelโ€™s, expressing satisfaction at finally bringing her killer to justice.

Marina Koppelโ€™s sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Martin Koppel, mourned her loss, describing her as a cherished family member whose absence has profoundly affected their lives. While Marinaโ€™s loved ones continue to grieve her untimely death, they find solace in seeing justice served.

Mumbai: People who supported Gulam Nabi Azad are still abandoning the party after he left Congress. Tuesday saw the resignation of 65 party officials who backed Gulam Nabi Azad. Following this, 42 leaders left the party on Wednesday as well. All of these leaders declare that they will join Gulam Nabi Azadโ€™s newly established party. This has resulted in the resignation of more than 100 party officials in support of Gulam Nabi Azad. Among these figures is Tara Chand, a former deputy chief minister.

There are numerous rumours that Gulam Nabi Azadโ€™s party may run for all 90 seats in Jammu and Kashmir next year. The rally for Gulam Nabi Azad will take place at Sainik Farms in Jammu, but before that, the party faces difficulty in trying to hold onto its support in the Union Territory given the resignation rates of Congressmen. Please be informed that Gulam Nabi Azad left the party following a vicious attack on Rahul Gandhi. Azad claimed that the moment Rahul Gandhi entered politics, the entire Congress structure broke down.

The formation of Gulam Nabi Azadโ€™s party has been given more priority. On September 4, he is set to speak at a rally in Jammu. His first public appearance since leaving Congress will be at this event. It is anticipated that he would introduce his party during this gathering.
