Key Takeaways From PM Modi’s US Visit

PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a US visit, was asked during a joint press conference with President Donald Trump whether allegations of bribery against Adani group chairman Gautam Adani were discussed between the two leaders.

“India is a democracy built on the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – the world is one family. Every Indian is part of this family, “And when it comes to such personal matters, two leaders of two countries will not get together on the topic and discuss anything on an individual matter,” PM Modi said in response.

The clip soon went viral on social media, and LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi showed no delay in expressing his views.

“If you ask questions in the country, there is silence. If you ask abroad, it is a personal matter! Even in America, Modi Ji covered up Adani Ji’s corruption!”

“When filling a friend’s pocket is “nation building” for Modiji, then taking bribes and looting the nation’s wealth becomes a “personal matter.” Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.

Now, what are the charges against Gautam Adani?

According to Economic Times, Under former President Joe Biden, the US Department of Justice had charged Adani for allegedly being part of a scheme to pay over $250 million (about ₹2,100 crore) bribe to officials in exchange of favorable terms for solar power contracts.

This was allegedly concealed from the US banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project, resulting in the charges against the businessman.

Interestingly, just days before PM Modi’s US visit,  President Donald Trump, in an executive order, signed and paused the enforcement of a federal law — Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) — that makes it a crime for US businesses to bribe foreign officials. The same act under which Adani has been charged.

Besides, President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced their intention to deepen the relationship between the two countries by setting a goal to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

During the meeting, PM Modi introduced the term “Make India Great Again”, drawing inspiration from Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again”, and described the synergy between the two as a “mega partnership for prosperity.”

After the meeting, India is expected to increase its crude oil and natural gas imports from the United States.

Besides, President Trump said that United States has agreed to extradite 2008 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana to India.

On US deporting illegal immigrants, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that if “people are living in the US illegally, India is ready to take them back”.PM Modi said that illegal immigrants are generally people from ordinary families who are “shown big dreams, and most of them are misled and brought” to the United States.

President Trump also announced to provide F-35 fighter jets to India. With this deal, India would join an elite club of countries that included NATO allies Israel and Japan, which would be allowed to buy the F-35.

“Starting this year, we will be increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars. We are also paving the way to provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters ultimately,” Trump said.

PM Modi also invited President Trump for the Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be hosted by India later this year.
