Maha Kumbh Stampede: Here’s What Yogi Govt’s New Guidelines Look Like

A Day after at least 30 people lost their lives and 60 others were injured in the stampede at the Maha Kumbh venue in Prayagraj, The Yogi govt has issued guidelines for crowd and traffic management at the world’s largest religious festival.

According to India Today, Under the new Sops entry of all types of vehicles has been banned in the Maha Kumbh area to ensure proper crowd management and the safety of devotees travelling there. VVIP passes have been cancelled, and vehicles will not be allowed to enter through any special pass.

Vehicles coming from districts adjoining Prayagraj are being stopped at the district border. A blanket ban on the entry of four-wheelers in the city is in place till February 4.The CM has directed officials to ensure smooth traffic in the Mela area and avoid unnecessary halts. He said the crowd pressure should not build up anywhere, and there should be no jams on the roads.

Street vendors on roads should be shifted to empty areas while ensuring that traffic is not affected, adding that people visiting the Mela should not be stopped unnecessarily.

Police officers have been asked to increase patrolling in the Mela area and ensure traffic is not blocked on routes like Ayodhya-Prayagraj, Kanpur-Prayagraj, Fatehpur-Prayagraj, Lucknow-Pratapgarh and Varanasi-Prayagraj. All return routes from Prayagraj should remain open and unobstructed.

Devotees should be allowed to proceed based on the prevailing situation. Wherever they halt at the Mela area, proper food and drinking water arrangements should be made available at all holding areas.

Keeping in view that lakhs of devotees were reaching Varanasi, Ayodhya, Chitrakoot and Mirzapur to offer prayers in the next two days, the CM has called for constant vigilance in these cities and created holding areas at the border points for them to proceed as per the circumstances.

Chief Minister Aditynath has directed officials to use barricading effectively to maintain crowd flow and ensure proper parking arrangements in the Mela.

Taking note of a large number of devotees gathering at all railway stations in Prayagraj, preparing to return home after completing their holy dip. CM Yogi has directed the ADG and Prayagraj District Magistrate to ensure every devotee’s safe and smooth departure. Officials were asked to run more special trains and extra buses from the Transport Corporation to accommodate the rush.

Ahead of the Amrit Snan on February 3. The CM has asked the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to review the arrangements of the Mela area.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a judicial probe into the stampede. He also announced ₹25 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, A public interest litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court, alleging “lapses, negligence, and utter failure of administration” on part of the Uttar Pradesh government over the stampede.
