Mumbai: BJP vice president Bernard N Marak of Meghalaya who was accused of running a Brothel in his farmhouse has been arrested by the UP Police in Harpur district. The prostitution racket came into observation after a raid at the place on Saturday and around 6 minors were rescued.

The district administrator of Police, Vivekanand Singh informed PTI that Bernard N Marak aka Rimpu has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh by a team that was sent to Tura regarding this matter.

The arrest came just hours after Meghalaya police warned the BJP leader.

The police have recorded the statement of the children who were rescued from Rimpu’s farmhouse. They claimed that they were operating a ‘brothel’. The raid also resulted in the detention of 47 young men and 26 women, many of whom were found naked and intoxicated.

The state police chief LR Bishnoi said that they had also recovered a huge amount of liquor, around 500 packets of contraceptives, cellphones and incriminating documents.

Marak has claimed that he is innocent and was allegedly the target of a “political plot” by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and feared for his life. Rubbishing the allegation, Deputy CM Prestone Tynson said the government allows the police to act as per their wisdom.
“The law is the law, no matter which party and if it is part of the government. Bad things have happened and we will let the law take its course”, said Tynsong.

Marak is facing charges under various sections of the IPC and the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, 1956.

Since the early 2000s, more than 25 criminal cases have been filed against BJP leader Marak across the northeast state.
