12 BJP MLAs Suspended From Maharashtra Assembly For Abusing Speaker

Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis, however, insisted that these were “false allegations”.

Chaos engulfed the very first day of the monsoon session of Maharashtra assembly over the issue of OBC reservation, resulting in suspension of 12 BJP MLAs for a year for abusing and manhandling the Speaker-in-chair. Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis, however, insisted that these were “false allegations”.

“These are false allegations. A story is being created… no one from the BJP abused”, Mr Fadnavis told the media. “For OBC (Other backward Castes) reservations, we are ready to sacrifice more than 12 MLAs,” he added.

The MLAs who were suspended are Parag Alavani, Ram Satpute, Sanjay Kute, Ashish Shelar, Abhimanyu Pawar, Girish Mahajan, Atul Bhatkalkar, Shirish Pimple, Jaykumar Rawal, Yogesh Sagar, Narayan Kuche, and Kirtikumar Bagadia.

“This is a Talibani government,” said Ashish Shelar, who’s amongst the suspended MLAs.

On May 29, after the Bombay High Court issued a direction, Fr Swamy was shifted to the private hospital from the Taloja Central Jail.

Tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Fr. Stan Swamy, accused in the Elgar Parishad case, passed away at 1.30 pm on Monday. He was 84 years old.

The activist was arrested in Bhima Koregaon violence case from Ranchi on October 9, 2020.

On May 29, after the Bombay High Court issued a direction, Fr Swamy was shifted to the private hospital from the Taloja Central Jail.

Swamy was undergoing treatment at the Holy Family Hospital. He had suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday, and doctors were unable to revive him.

Swamy and his co-accused, in the Elgar Parishad case, had been charged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as being members of frontal organisations working on behalf of the banned CPI (Maoists). The NIA, last month, had filed an affidavit before the HC opposing Swamy’s bail plea. It had said there did not exist a “conclusive proof” of his medical ailments. The agency had alleged that Swamy was a Maoist, who had hatched a conspiracy to create unrest in the country.
