31 Students File Petition In SC Against UGC’s Decision To Conduct Exams

In the July 6 circular of the UGC, all universities all across India have been asked to wrap up a final year or final term examinations before September 30.

At least 31 students from various universities across India have approached the top court demanding to dismiss the latest University Grants Commission (UGC) circular directing universities to wrap up final year examinations by September 30.

Having one positive Covid-19 patient among the 31 petitioners, they have urged the Supreme Court that the planned examinations be canceled in the interest of justice for the students as the number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise.

In the July 6 circular of the UGC, all universities all across India have been asked to wrap up a final year or final term examinations before September 30. The 31 students from 13 different states and one union territory have asked to squash this circular.

Advocate Anubha Srivastava Sahai, through whom the petition has been filed, has written in the petition that after canceling the final year exams of all universities, the results of such students should be calculated on the basis of their internal assessment or past performance. It is also urged that the students’ marksheets should be issued before July 31.

The plea has also urged for directions to the UGC to adopt the CBSE model and conduct an examination at a later date for the students who are not satisfied with the marks awarded on the basis of their internal/ past assessment.

Over 640 universities responded on the question of holding varsity exams amid the pandemic, the UGC had said earlier. It also added that out of these 640 universities, 454 have either conducted the examination or are planning to conduct exams while 177 universities are yet to decide on the conduct of the examination.

The plea by 31 students comes soon after Aditya Thackeray’s Yuva Sena approached the top court urging to scarp the UGC directions.
