Rajnath Singh holds meeting with GOM over mob lynching

New Delhi| To counter the increasing cases of mob lynching in India a meeting of Group of Ministers (GOM) meeting was held at the Union Home Ministry on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Union Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, along with other ministers and Union Home Secretary were present at the meeting. Earlier a panel of senior government officials of the Central Government submitted their report to the GOM headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

According to sources, the panel in their report stated that the social media platforms including Whatsapp are responsible for the growing incidents of Mob Lynching. The panel further added that to make the law tough by adding provisions in IPC and CRPC for parliamentary approval. The panel also suggested that in order to curb such content on the internet and social media, police and security agencies need to increase their presence in cyberspace.

Earlier after Supreme Court’s order, the Home Ministry issued an advisory to States and Union Territories to curb the incidents of mobs lynching.
