Activist Sudha Bharadwaj Has Developed Heart Ailment Due To Stress In Jail, Says Family

Maaysha Bharadwaj, along with other family members, colleagues, and friends, demanded: “for an early, decisive hearing for Sudha Bharadwaj’s release”.

One of the activists arrested in link with Bhima-Koregaon case, Sudha Bharadwaj, has developed a heart ailment “triggered by the stress” in jail, her daughter informed in a press note on Tuesday.

After “nearly two months of house arrest”, Bharadwaj was taken into custody on October 27, 2018.

Maaysha Bharadwaj, her daughter, cited a medical report from the jail dated July 23 in which it has been stated that her mother is suffering from “Ischemic Heart Disease, a heart problem caused by narrowing of arteries that causes reduced blood flow to the heart muscle and can lead to a heart attack”. She also added that her mother had no heart-related problems before being jailed.

“Doctors consulted explained such condition…as serious that could lead to a heart attack,” she said, adding, “The medical report obtained from the jail does not clarify when this condition was diagnosed, nor does it explain the basis for this diagnosis. This uncertainty and the lack of disclosure of full medical history has caused deep concern to all her extended family and close colleagues.”

Her daughter also said that Bharadwaj suffers from diabetes, blood pressure, and has a history of pulmonary tuberculosis. “Such health condition makes Sudha Bharadwaj extremely vulnerable and susceptible to infections of Covid 19,” she said. “At a time of such a pandemic, each day spent in an unsafe, crowded place is exposing a person with co-morbidities to unnecessary health risk. Such delays in the judicial process are thus unconscionable,” she added.

Maaysha Bharadwaj, along with other family members, colleagues, and friends, demanded: “for an early, decisive hearing for Sudha Bharadwaj’s release”.
