On Wednesday, Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi appointed Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury as the new president of the West Bengal Congress, the Congress Party said.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is also the leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha. After the demise of former West Bengal Congress Committee chief Somen Mitra, Chowdhury’s appointment was necessitated.
Official communication on Wednesday night said: “The Congress president has appointed Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury as the president of West Bengal Congress Committee with immediate effect.”
“At this juncture, the party also remembers the services of Late Shri Somen Mitra, a veteran Congressman whose untimely demise has left a void amongst all Congress workers. He will always be remembered for his dedication to the cause,” AICC Chief, KC Venugopal, said in the statement.
Chowdhury’s appointment comes a year ahead of assembly polls in West Bengal. He is considered one of the strong critics of the incumbent TMC and Mamata Banerjee.
There are also speculations about whether Chowdhury would continue to be the leader of the party in Lok Sabha, considering the party’s tradition of offering only one post at a time to one person.
