Ambedkar’s statue desecrated in Madhya Pradesh

A statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar was allegedly desecrated by unidentified persons in Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district, a police official said today.

The statue, installed on outskirts of Kalisindh village, located about 28 kms from the district headquarters, was desecrated by some persons last night, Bercha police station in-charge Rakesh Nain said.

Some locals informed the police after they found an arm and spectacles of the statue broken.

Shajapur district’s Superintendent of Police Anurag Sharma and other officials reached the spot to look into the matter.

A police team has been formed to search for culprits, Sharma said.

A number of Dalits gathered at the spot following the incident. Heavy security has been deployed in the area, Nain said.

Based on a complaint lodged by local resident Avinash Chouradia, the police have registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the IPC, he said, adding that an investigation is underway.
