Arvind Kumar Sharma, PM Modi’s Trusted Officer Of 20 Years, Joins BJP After Voluntary Retirement

Mr Sharma has not only worked with PM Modi in the centre but was also a part of his team since he became Gujarat CM.

After spending years as an IAS officer in Narendra Modi’s team being touted as his most trusted aides, Arvind Kumar Sharma today joined the BJP in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. Mr Sharma is tipped for the UP Legislative Council, of which 12 seats are due on January 28, and maybe given an important post in the government of Yogi Adityanath.

The development came shortly after the secretary in the centre’s Ministry for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) announced voluntary retirement this week. This decision came as a surprise to many but by all accounts, he is set for a significant political role in Uttar Pradesh.

The 1988 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre comes from Mau in Uttar Pradesh.

Mr Sharma has not only worked with PM Modi in the centre but was also a part of his team since he became Gujarat CM. He joined him as Secretary in 2001 when Mr Modi began his stint as Gujarat Chief Minister. Mr Sharma was a part of the Prime Minister’s Office as well as the Chief Minister’s Office. BJP leaders say Mr Sharma earned the Prime Minister’s trust with his results-driven approach.

Arvind Kumar Sharma was chief executive of the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board when PM Modi was in Gujarat. When the BJP came to power after a landslide victory, he joined the PM’s Office in 2014.

Mr Sharma was moved to the critical MSME ministry in May last year when the government was working on relief for the sector from the coronavirus lockdown.
