As Daily Covid-19 Cases Surge, Fear Of Second Wave Of Pandemic Looms Over India

Maharashtra, Kerala, and Punjab are among the five states termed “concern states” by the Centre due surge in number of cases reported in the last one week.

As daily cases of Coronavirus infection touch 15,000 mark again on Monday, the waning covid-19 pandemic appears to be taking a U-turn in India with indication that a second wave of infection setting in. Though on Tuesday, according to union health ministry’s data, 10,584 new infections were reported across the country. The total tally of covid-19 cases on Monday crossed 1.10 crores and the death toll reached close to 1,56,500.

On Sunday, the country recorded single day surge of 14,199 cases. The union health ministry data showed Monday that the country’s active caseload remained 1,50,055 on Monday which consists of 1.36% of India’s total Positive Cases.

According to the data available with the health ministry, over 86.3% of the new cases are from 5 States. The western state of Maharashtra continues to to report the highest daily new cases, with 6,971 new infections on Monday. It is followed by Kerala with 4,070 while Tamil Nadu reported 452 new cases. Karnataka (413), and Punjab (348) were also among top five states. Among 83 deaths reported on Monday, Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (35) and Kerala reported 15 deaths.

A senior scientist on Monday said there are more than 7,000 coronavirus mutations in India of which some could pose a serious risk.

The data on Tuesday showed that active caseload has reduced to 1,47,306, which comprises 1.34 per cent of the total caseload.

Maharashtra, Kerala, and Punjab are among the five states termed “concern states” by the Centre due surge in number of cases reported in the last one week. The other two in the list are Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, the IE reported.

The Health Minister stated that 21 states or UTs have not reported any new cases in last 24 hours.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan today informed that India’s cumulative vaccine coverage has crossed 1.17 crore.
