Assam: Man forced to eat pork for allegedly selling beef; assaulted by mob

Assam | A 68-year-old man in Assam accused of selling beef, was thrashed by a mob and was forced to eat pork, in another of a mob lynching case.

The incident took place on April 7 in Assam’s Biswanath Chariali town.

The video of the case is circulating on social media.

The man identified as Shaukat Ali can be seen surrounded by a group of people, who are demanding answers from him.

The crowd questioned if he was Bangladeshi and if his name was in the NRC (National Register of Citizens), and asked why was he selling beef and whether he has a license to do so.

However, matters get worse when the crowd tries to force Ali into eating pork from a packet.

According to local police, Ali is a businessman and has been running an eatery in the area for the last 35 years. The mob accused him of selling beef in the weekly market.

The police have registered two FIRs regarding the case and have detained the accused.

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi reacted to the incident on Twitter, by writing, “I know many people who feel they’re desensitized because of the number of lynchings in the last five years. I am not, each video infuriates me and saddens me.”

While beef is not banned in Assam, cattle slaughter in the state comes under the purview of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 1950.
