“Call Recordings, Phone Numbers From Abhishek Banerjee’s Office”: Suvendu Adhikari Admits Amid Pegasus Row

Suvendu Adhikari said, “I’ve each and every call record, phone number of all those who call you from the nephew’s (Abhishek Banerjee) office.”

East Midnapore| Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari has made a rare admission amid the Pegasus snooping row. In a video doing rounds on social media, Suvendu Adhikari can be heard saying that he has call details of phone calls from the office of Abhishek Banerjee to the police and other officials of the state. Speaking in Bengali, he further warns that if the state government is with them, the Central govt is with him.

He said, “I’ve each and every call record, phone number of all those who call you from the nephew’s (Abhishek Banerjee) office. If you have the state government with you, even we have the central government with us.”

The video comes to light at a time when controversy has broken out over the alleged targeting of 300 Indians for spying using Pegasus Spyware. The spyware hit the headlines on Sunday, ahead of the Monsoon session of the parliament. According to a Global investigative report by 16 media outlets in collaboration with Forbidden Stories and Amnesty International, close to 50,000 phone numbers were on the target list for spying through Pegasus.

The list includes over 40 prominent journalists, Opposition leaders and activists, lawyers etc. The report revealed, phone number of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee is also on the list. Incidentally, the phone number of Prashant Kishor who recently worked with TMC as a political strategist is also found to be compromised.

In light of this, the “confession” or “admission” by Suvendu Adhikari, who is considered a Blue-eyed boy of PM Modi, has led to several questions.

According to local media, this video was recorded on Monday when Adhikari, along with his associates reached the East Midnapore SP office. He reprimanded the SP, warning him of transfer. Adhikari warned SP Amarnath K. and said, “Do not do anything that will lead to you doing duty in Jammu or Baramulla.”

His angry outburst at the SP came in the wake of a police investigation against him in the Tarpauline Theft case and a murder case involving his security guard.
