Kanpur: A murder case has been lodged against six suspended police personnel as per officials. The victim Manish Gupta died of an alleged assault by the policemen who entered his hotel room in Gorakhpur in the early hours of Tuesday, claiming to be looking for criminals.
Victim’s wife Meenakshi has accused the police and hotel staff of a cover-up. “My husband was murdered in that hotel, he was killed by a policeman. There was no blood on the scene even though my husband was beaten to death. Two of his friends said that there was blood everywhere, but the hotel staff cleaned it up,” she said while weeping.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur, a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the six suspended policemen who went missing after the incident are being hunted by the police.
“Prima facie in this case, we had suspended six policemen. Now, on the basis of a complaint by the deceased’s family, we have filed a case against six policemen,” Gorakhpur SSP Vipin Tada told reporters.
Victim’s body cremated
On Wednesday, Manish Gupta’s body was brought to his home in Para, Kanpur. However, his family refused to cremate the body till the accused are arrested. Despite attempts by the administration throughout the day, the family did not agree to give consent for the cremation.
SP Yuvjan Sabha workers protested against the state government on Wednesday, demanding immediate action against the culprits on behalf of the victim’s family.
Police warns victim’s family: Matter can take long
A video of UP Police officers is viral which shows that the police went to meet the victim’s family and said that the matter would go on for a long time in the court. “I am requesting you like an elder brother. After a court case, you will not believe, it takes years in court,” the district magistrate Vijay Karan Anand is seen telling the family.
The video then appears to show police chief Vipin Tada saying “They did not have any previous enmity. They went in uniform and that is why I am listening to you since morning. You asked for them to be suspended and I did that. They will not be reinstated till they get a clean chit.”
The video is being criticised on social media as netizens questioned the behaviour of the police officials’ with the victim’s kin.
According to report the body was cremated by the administration. they administration has claimed that the last ritual was done with the approval of victim’s family.
Demands by Victim’s family
The family of the deceased businessman has put three demands to the authorities – first, the case be transferred to Kanpur; second, the family gets Rs 50 lakh in compensation and third, a job from the state government.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also spoke to the deceased’s wife, Meenakshi Gupta, on Tuesday night and extended his condolences while the state government announced Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance for the family.
Case
Manish Gupta, a 38-year-old property dealer from Kanpur, died in a hotel in Gorakhpur in the early hours of Tuesday. Police said they entered his hotel room as they were on the lookout for “suspicious persons”. They claim Manish Gupta died of a head injury sustained from falling to the ground in a state of drunkenness.
However, the victim’s family members claim he died after the policemen who entered his room attacked him.
