CJI denies urgent hearing in contempt petition against Sabarimala priest for performing purification

New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Thursday denied urgent hearing in a contempt petition against the Sabrimala priest for performing purification in the temple after entry of 2 women in the temple.

Denying the hearing on mention by advocate PV Dinesh, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said,”We cannot constitute separate bench for Contempt petition.” He further added that the matter will be taken up on January 22 when the rests of review petitions are scheduled to be heard.

The Sabarimala temple was closed on Wednesday just hours after two women below the age of 50 entered the shrine to carry out ‘purification’ rituals. According to reports, the temple was closed around 10.30am as opposed to 1pm, when it is usually shut. Following an hour-long ‘purification’ ritual, the sanctum sanctorum was reopened just before 11.30am. The purification process was conducted after two women devotees entered Sabarimala shrine on Tuesday. The two women Bindu and Kanakdurga who are in their 40s offered their prayers at Sabarimala temple at around 3.45 am in the morning. They were accompanied by police personnel.

This was for the first time since the Supreme Court bench in its 4:1 verdict removed the ban on entry of women devotees between the age of 10 to 50 in Sabarimala temple.
