New Delhi| A mob of Hindutva supporters raised Hateful and communal slogans in a BJP rally at the heart of India’s national capital Delhi on Sunday. The event organized by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay under the name “Bharat Jodo Movement”, demanded the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and an end to certain “Colonial-era laws”. According to an Indian Express report, the event was held without police permission. The videos from the event also show that Covid-19 rules were violated during the gathering.

Videos circulated on Social Media also show communal, inflammatory and anti-Muslim slogans being chanted by the attendees. One of the clips showed that a slogan calling for the killing of Muslims was also raised at the event. Similar slogans were earlier raised at Mahapanchayats organized in Haryana to support those who are accused of lynching Asif Khan. The event organized at Jantar Mantar was also attended by BJP leader Gajendra Chauhan.

According to a police official quoted by the Indian Express, permission was sought to hold the event but was denied. “Police arrangements were in place and we thought around 50 people would come, but suddenly many people in small groups started gathering. They were protesting peacefully but started raising slogans when they were dispersing,” the police official was quoted as saying.

Anmol Pritam, a reporter of the Digital news channel National Dastak was also allegedly harassed and was forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. In a video that is now circulating on Social Media, it can be seen that Pritam is being called “jihadi” by the crowd when he refuses to chant the slogan.

When asked about the incident, Upadhyay claimed to have no knowledge. He told Bar and Bench that the sloganeering took place after his rally.
