Congress Government In Puducherry Loses Majority After Two MLAs Resign In Two Days

The resignations from the members come just ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Puducherry tomorrow.

After four MLAs resigned from the assembly, with two of them quitting in the last two days, the Congress government has lost its thin majority in Puducherry months before assembly polls.

Congress party, out of 30 elected members, had 15 MLAs. With the support of 2 members of DMK, the government was ahead of the majority by a thin margin.

However, after the resignations, Congress is left with 11, leaving the V Narayanasamy government short of a majority.

The resignations from the members come just ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Puducherry tomorrow to prep election strategy, his first since the party took power in the Union Territory.

The resignations came over the last few weeks. Two of these members- A Namassivayam and E.Theeppainjan- resigned on January 25. Among the other two, one resigned on Monday and the other quit today.

In Puducherry and neighbouring Tamil Nadu, assembly elections are due in the month of May.

In the assembly elections held in 2016, Congress had won 14 seats, including the speaker. It received the support of the DMK and an Independent.

The AIADMK has four MLAs, the AINRC has seven and there are three nominated members of the BJP.
