ED Examines FIR Into Funding Of Website Named In Hathras Case

In Chandpa police station in Hathras, an FIR has been filed against the website accusing it of fanning widespread protests after the Hathras victim’s death.

The Enforcement Directorate may soon file a money laundering case into the alleged funding of a website accused of inciting protests in the Hathras case. This comes after Hathras police registered dozens of FIRs related to protests over the alleged gang-rape and murder of a Dalit 19-year-old girl. In Chandpa police station in Hathras, an FIR has been filed against the website accusing it of fanning widespread protests after the Hathras victim’s death.

The Hathras police filed an FIR against the website under Section 153 A which is a scheduled offence under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, according to the Times of India report. All funds collected by committing such a crime are liable to be seized by it, the agency said.

The ED is also likely to conduct an inquiry from domain servers, the details of the money received, and its utilisation. The ultimate beneficiaries of the funds received by the website may also be probed by the ED.

The IP address or addresses from where the webpage was launched can also be asked by the agency from the telecom service provider.

“The central probe agency is “examining” a Hathras police FIR linked to charges filed against a website created on an online platform,” ED Joint Director (Lucknow zone) Rajeshwar Singh was quoted as saying by PTI.

A link, ‘justice for Hathras victim’, was uploaded on the online platform, sources told the agency. The has same has been probed for alleged dubious activities.

Those involved in the alleged money laundering can be arrested and prosecuted under the PMLA, as per ED officials.
