Election For Congress President In June, Party Decides After Row At CWC Meet

“There will be a new elected Congress president in June 2021. This change in schedule has been done due to upcoming state assembly elections,” KC Venugopal said.

During the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting today, it was decided that new Congress president will be elected after five state elections due by May. Reportedly, an argument broke out between two groups who were for and against elections to be held immediately, during which Rahul Gandhi said: “Once and for all, finish it and move on.”

Senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik and P Chidambaram reportedly asked for immediate organisational polls. These are the same leader who’ve raised some uncomfortable questions regarding the functioning of Congress party and leadership after multiple election defeats.

However, considered as Gandhi-loyalists in Congress party, Ashok Gehlot, Amarinder Singh, AK Antony, Tariq Anwar and Oommen Chandy said the Congress president’s election should be held after polls in five states including Bengal and Tamil Nadu. One leader commented: “Whose agenda are we working towards? The BJP doesn’t talk about internal elections like our party? The first priority is to fight the state elections then organisational elections.”

“There will be a new elected Congress president in June 2021. This change in schedule has been done due to upcoming state assembly elections,” KC Venugopal, Congress general secretary said in a press conference after the CWC meeting. All CWC leaders unanimously decided to hold elections in June, Mr Venugopal informed.

“First of all Congress president election will be held and then the election for CWC members will be held. That is the usual process. We will share the scheduled in coming days,” he added.

This decision means Sonia Gandhi will continue to be interim president of the party for about six more months. The CWC passed a three-point resolution, which sought repeal of the contentions farm laws. The party also thanked scientists while appealing to people to come forward for COVID-19 vaccination and demanded a probe by Joint Parliamentary Committee into the WhatsApp chat leak.
